Forgoing gifts for giving

Teodoro Costa, for his fifth birthday party last year, had an odd request for his friends and family: He didn’t want any presents.

Instead, he asked them to donate money to a “gift fund”, with half the amount going to a cause he felt especially passionate about.

Doctor works to save youth from violence before they reach his ER

As an emergency physician at Kings County Hospital Center, Dr. Rob Gore has faced many traumatic situations that he’d rather forget. But some moments stick with him.

“Probably the worst thing that I’ve ever had to do is tell a 15-year-old’s mother that her son was killed,” Gore said. “If I can’t keep somebody alive, I’ve failed.”

Gore, a Brooklyn native, finds violent injuries particularly hard to stomach — a feeling compounded by the fact that many of the victims he treats are young men of color.

缝补无声的岁月

57年来,王钦祥一直守在缝纫机旁,以裁剪缝补衣服为生。(严宣融摄)

75岁的王钦祥天生聋哑,当年职业学校的老师叫他学裁缝,改变了他的一生。他靠缝补的一技之长,养活全家人,后来更与同是聋哑的太太一起裁衣打拼20多年,赶上本地裁缝业的黄金时期。当裁缝业从量身裁衣转型为修改衣物的期间,他相续失去太太和母亲。

无儿无女的王钦祥,如今依然做着他在1961年自职业学校毕业后的工作。独自住在陈旧的三房式组屋,由于他的家人只略懂手语,每天阅读四份报纸,几乎是他唯一的“沟通”方式。

记者通过他的弟弟王钦茂,以及个人观察,走入王钦祥沉默的世界。

RSAF Pilot Put Wedding Anniversary On Hold To Keep Trump-Kim Summit Safe

For months, Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) pilot Ingkiriwang Reeve, 31, had been planning a backpacking trip around China with his wife and secondary school sweetheart to celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary.

But when news broke that United States President Donald Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-Un would be meeting in Singapore on June 12, Captain Reeve immediately put his holiday plans on hold. His wife, whom he had dated since Secondary 2, gave him her blessings.
